Myth: It’s Just a Safety So the Essay Doesn’t Really Matter

Myth #4: “It’s Just a Safety, So the Essay Doesn’t Really Matter”

Let me stop you right there.

One of the most common mistakes I see, every single year,is students treating their so-called "safety schools" like a casual backup plan. You know the logic: “It’s in-state. Their admit rate is high. I’ve got great grades and test scores. I’ll just throw something together the night before.”

No, no, no.

Let me be clear: there’s no such thing as a throwaway application.

Just because a school might admit more students,or you think you’re a strong match, doesn’t mean you get to slack off. The application is still a reflection of your work ethic, your priorities, and your interest. And admissions officers are trained to spot a rushed, generic, or lackluster essay a mile away.

I once had a student, top stats, stellar résumé,apply to a very competitive state school. Let’s just say it was his “sure thing.” He didn’t use my help. His essay was flat, written in one sitting, unedited. He was waitlisted.

Here’s the reality: selective public universities like University of Michigan, UT Austin, UNC Chapel Hill, and even honors programs at in-state schools read everything. The essay matters. The way you present yourself matters. Even for your safeties.

Why? Because it’s not just about getting in. That same “easy school” could be the one offering merit aid, honors housing, special programs, or early registration. And trust me,those perks aren’t handed out to students who treat the application like a leftover chore.

Also, let’s not forget: essays are your voice. They tell your story. And they don’t stop mattering just because the acceptance rate is higher. In fact, schools often look more closely at essays when they’re choosing between two very qualified candidates.

So no, you don’t need to deliver a Harvard-level masterpiece for every school. But what you do need is effort. Clarity. Care. Proofread it. Polish it. And most importantly, mean it.

Remember: admissions offices can feel when a student truly wants to be there. And they can just as easily feel when that student didn’t bother.

Bottom line? There are no shortcuts in this process. Not for the Ivies. Not for your in-state options. Not for your safeties. Put in the work, everywhere.

Because how you do one thing is how you do everything.
